| Kanto Region
Kanto lies to the east of Johto; they presumably make up a small continent. South of Kanto are the Sevii and Orange Islands. Hoenn, introduced in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, is supposedly further to the southwest. Routes located wholly within Kanto are numbered 1 to 25; routes 26, 27 and 28 connect Kanto with Johto.

| Jhoto Region
The names of Johto towns and cities are based of different types of plants and trees, in the tradition of having towns and cities named after colors in the Kanto region. Johto lies directly to the west of Kanto and to the northeast of Hoenn, and is based on the Kansai and Tokai regions of Japan. Routes wholly located in Johto are numbered from 29 to 46 while routes 26, 27, and 28 connect Johto with the Kanto region. Routes 1 to 25 are located wholly in Kanto.

| Hoenn Region
Hoenn is based on the island of Kyűshű in Japan and lies to the southwest of Kanto and Johto in the Pokémon world. According to Pokémon legend, the Hoenn region was formed by the legendary land Pokémon Groudon raising the land and the legendary ocean Pokémon, Kyogre, expanding the sea. The Hoenn region contains its own Pokémon League, called the Hoenn League, and its own Elite Four, unlike Johto and Kanto which share their Elite Four in the video games. Routes in Hoenn are numbered from 101 to 134 and do not follow sequentially from routes in Kanto-Johto, which were numbered 1 to 46.

Sinnoh, like Pokémon regions in previous games, features a broad range of environments for the player to explore. The region is mountainous and temperate, and features, for the first time in a Pokémon RPG, snowy routes.
